About
The Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg (OVGU) is a modern, dynamic university named after the 17th-century scientist and inventor Otto von Guericke, famous for his pioneering work on the vacuum and atmospheric pressure. Founded in 1993 through the merger of three long-standing institutions, OVGU has quickly developed a reputation for innovative research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and strong international connections.
With around 13,000 students OVGU offers a welcoming and diverse academic environment. Its campus is spread in different parts of the city, mixing the local community and students well. The library is right next to the main canteen, offering students great opportunities to team up for studying and spending the breaks together.
The university’s research and teaching cover a wide range of fields, from engineering, natural sciences, and medicine to economics, humanities, and social sciences. Thus, the university is well-equipped with diverse resources and high-quality tools for media production and model making, all of which will support your projects throughout the Summer School.
OVGU is deeply engaged in the city’s development, forging links between science, industry, and culture. Engagement-Hubs like transSCAPE (verlinken) or in:takt (verlinken) are third mission initiatives of the university whose purpose is to bridge science and the local public and to create non-commercial meeting places for social engagement. As partners of the Summer School transSCAPE which is located near the river Elbe in the Science Port and the in:takt which is located directly in the city center will be important players for the development of your projects.
As a participant, you will benefit from OVGU’s academic expertise, modern facilities, vibrant student community and the student canteen. Whether you are working in a workshop at the Science Port, collaborating in the creative space in:takt, or enjoying the campus site, OVGU will be your base for learning, experimenting, and connecting during your time in Magdeburg.
