Magdeburg

Magdeburg´s history dates back to 805. It was one of the region’s largest and most prosperous cities during Medieval times, and suffered catastrophic bombing during World War II. As the capital city of Saxony-Anhalt, Magdeburg was a focal point of rebuilding and development during the GDR era and later of reunited Germany. Today, Magdeburg, with over 1,200 years of history, stands as a vibrant scientific and educational hub. Its landmarks—from the Gothic Magdeburg Cathedral (Germany’s first Gothic cathedral and resting place of Emperor Otto I) to modern architectural treasures like the Hundertwasser-designed Green Citadel—reflect the city's enduring cultural development.

Throughout Magdeburg you can find lots of parks not only along the river Elbe. There, every aspect of daily life meets up: you will see families, Skaters, people playing games, running or biking, groups of friends barbecuing, reading, making music and turning the recreation sites into vibrant spots. The Nordpark is right at the University, the Herrenkrugpark stretches alongside the river Elbe in the North of Magdeburg while the Rotehornpark is in the South of Magdeburg right across the river Elbe. Magdeburg is one of the four most green cities of Germany!

Events can be found all over Magdeburg. Websites like Magdeboogie or the magazine DATEs also inform reliably about social activities at small places or more known places like the Datsche.
